Co. F, 21st GA, Ben Hill Infantry

I have an ancestor, John Porter who joined the Ben Hill Infantry (Co. F, 21st GA) 9 July 1861 in Antioch, GA. I was told he died in the Civil War. I sent for his Civil War papers and they sent me a wrong John w. Porter. This John W. Porter would have been 26 in 1861 and my John Porter would have been 18. John W. Porter's Military papers say he joined Co. E, 21 GA NOT Co. F. Does anyone know if there were any roll calls or muster in paper work. I am really confused. Also I am reading "Campaigning with Old Hickory" and the books states that my John Porter lived until 1900. Find this strange because he never came back to see his mother or little brother.
