Re: 2nd Regiment LDT

Thanks Dennis,

As I understand it, the 1st Regiment Local Defense was split into two battalions in August 1864. The 1st Battalion under George T. Jackson was made up of 2 companies of the 1st Regiment with 3 unattached companies. The 2nd Battalion under Isadore P Girardey was made up of 5 companies of the 1st Regiment (E,F,G,H and I).

The problem I see is that the commanders of the companies of the 1st Regiment listed in CSR (Gould, Jackson, Holleyman, Hatch, Lufburrow, Markey, CS Smith, Veronse, Caminade and Adam) are completely different to those listed as being in the 2nd Regiment (MacMurphy, Stadelman, Moore, AJ Smith, Selkirk, Marley, Pridewell, Hudson, Rowley and Cross). If the 2nd Regiment was actually the 2nd Battalion I would expect some names to be common to both. Also ten companies are listed which is regimental size not a battalion.

According to Bragg et.al., "Never For Want of Powder" there were 20 companies of Local Defense troops at Augusta by December 1863, 10 of which were formed into the 1st Regiment in January 1864. I think it's a possibility that a second regiment may have been formed.
