He was recorded present on the muster dated, July 2, 1864. The subsequent muster in the records, held December 12, he was recorded as Absent, prisoner of war.

The American CW Research Database has produced a “Regimental Casualty Analysis” that reveal these engagements for the 18th Georgia between July 29, 1864 thru October 19 along with the number of captured reported therein. One cannot vouch for the completeness of this report.

7/29 Petersburg 2
8/16 Deep Bottom Run 10
8/29 Mine Run 1
9/19 Fisher’s Hill 1
9/19 0
10/19 Cedar Creek 38

His name is not recorded in these lists of POWs. Apparently, during the development of these Compiled Service Records, no Federal POW records were found in his name.

It could be that his comrades thought he had been captured, not knowing the truth of the matter. He was with them one minute. later, after an engagement he was missing. He very well may have been killed, not captured.
