George W. Lee had previously served as Commanding Officer of the 38th Georgia Infantry, resigning July, 1862 for medical reasons. He later served as a Lt. Col. with the 3rd Cavalry Battalion Georgia State Guard (Atlanta Fire Battalion) which was mustered out February 4, 1864
