Re: Pension Help - Thomas B Schley

LW,

Henderson is NOT a primary source. She and her team of students gleaned information from primary sources (i.e. the compiled military service records and the pensions filed for by Confederate veterans and widows that filed in Georgia, and a small sprinkling of other material) and after looking at thousands of them I can tell you that the quality control is inconsistent. It is imperative for those that are researching to look at the original documents.

The only Schley/Shley that file for a Georgia Confederate Veteran or Widow's pension was a John Schley from Richmond County. (Source: Index to Georgia Civil War Confederate Pension Files by Virgil D. White).

A couple of thoughts. Check the Georgia United Daughter of the Confederacy records. They have a number of books published that extracts from letters, diaries, journals, and newspaper articles that may be of assistance. If he had a widow check the other Confederate States for her potentially filing there. Check for regimental histories and anything at the Georgia State Library and Archives. Henderson worked there for years and may have ran across the account in some material there and included it.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
