It took him how long to desert?

In the state of New York lies a grave marked by the GAR for their gallant soldier Hugh Clemons. Mr. Clemons was born in Vermont and according to his obituary at Find-A-Grave memorial #101197606 he visited Georgia in 1858 and was forced into the Confederate Army. According to his Compiled Military Service Records he enlisted in Company C of the 26th Regiment, Georgia Infantry on February 18, 1862 at Brunswick, Georgia for 12 months. According to his obituary he left the Confederate Army prior to Gettysburg, however Federal POW records state that he was taken prisoner after the battle. He was shown as being desirous in joining the Union Army while at Fort Delaware and transferred to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry after telling Union authorities that he had been conscripted into the Confederate Army. Giving him the benefit of the doubt I suppose he was forced to rejoin the Confederate Army after his 12 months were up. Just another example of a Yankee who turned out to be a galvanized Yankee.
