Re: 29th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry & Decatur Coun
My g-g-g-grandfather, A. B. Middleton, served as a Private in Company G of the 29th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He was born in South Carolina (county unknown) c. 1820-1823 and moved to Early County (southwestern) GA apparently between 1840 and 1846. He passed away sometime between the 1880 and 1900 censuses (date unknown), likely where he had been a longtime resident in Miller County GA (adjacent to Early County). As I have been unable to find a pension application through ancestry.com, I am reluctant to pay for copies of records through history-sites.com. Is there a way to find out in advance if pension records exist before making a payment? Also, any suggestions on how to find out where in SC he may have come from? By the way, I have never found A. B. Middleton's name in the list of CSA veterans from the historical society records of Miller and Early Counties. Were these cavalry soldiers considered "second-class" veterans? A. B.'s first name in other records is sometimes listed as Alsey, other times as Austin. Thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide.
