Evidently the regiment was an organization on paper only, and never operated above company strength in any one place. Companies turned in initial muster rolls, some captains apologizing for their lack of acquaintance with military practices. The next roll submitted was a muster out roll dated January 1864. As best we can understand, companies patrolled their home counties looking for deserters and conscripts.
