26th Regiment Georgia Infantry

I am researching 4 brothers from Appling Co, GA who fought for the Confederate Army. Samuel Duncan Johnson (1827-1904) my 2nd great grandfather along with brothers John M Johnson (1838-1862) and Lemuel Johnson (1844-1918) enlisted 26 Aug 1861 at Waresboro, Ware Co., GA. as privates. The 4th brother James Marion Johnson fought in Co E 6th Regiment Georgia Reserves.

Samuel, John and Lemuel joined what was initially designated Co H, 13th Regiment Georgia Infantry. The unit was reformed and became Co D, 13th Regiment Georgia Infantry and finally in May 1862 the designation became Co F, 26th Regiment Georgia Infantry. This unit would be assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia and if I read my history correctly they fought under Richard Ewell's Division until Ewell was wounded during the battle of Manasas (I believe it was the 1st battle) The unit then fought under Early's Division According to NARA Confederate Service Records both Samuel Duncan Johnson and Lemuel Johnson were surrendered at Appomattox Court House.

The 3rd brother, John M Johnson was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg, MD 17 Sep 1862 as he appears on Ewell's list of killed, wounded or missing for Aug 22 thru Sep 20, 1862. He was listed as Co F, 26th Regiment Georgia Infantry. According to the book "South Georgia Rebels" by Alton J Murray which tells the story of the 26th Georgia, John M Johnson is said to have died 1862 in a Staunton, VA hospital. Not knowing the name of the hospital my research led me to Thornrose cemetery where about 1770 confederate soldiers are buried in unmarked graves and according to their records they show "Private J.M. Johnson Co A, 26th Regiment Georgia Infantry buried 29 Sep 1862 age 27".

This information matches the time line and location but the discrepancy lies in the company number. One explanation could be a transcription error when the hand written records were transcribed. I would rather try and ascertain whether or not there was A J. M. Johnson in Co A, 26th Regiment Georgia Infantry. If not, I feel I have located my ancestor.

Please forgive the lengthy background but I wanted to supply all the information in order to assist anyone who might be able to help me. I have searched on line for rosters of A Company but have not found complete rosters. I know this because in browsing NARA service records I have found men who were listed in this company but not on the rosters.

Does anyone have what they feel might be a complete roster of Co A and Co F, 26th Regiment Georgia Infantry?

Thank you in advance

David Johnson
