I'd love to see Barkley's pension file in its entirety. My only source, thus far, is the file that is accessible through the National Archives website Fold3. I have access to a few wartime Georgia newspapers but, unfortunately, the "Columbus Daily Times" isn't one of them. I'll now be sure to be on the lookout for a possible Monroe County (Forsyth, GA) weekly publication. I do have access to the "Macon Telegraph", and will search it more diligently when there is time.

A well-researched history of Lawton's Brigade during the Maryland Campaign sounds like an excellent idea, and if you need photographs of some of the Yankee casualties they created I should be able to help you out. And, of course, you're more than welcome to use the Pvt. William Barkley image. Currently, it's in transit to my home. Are you aware of any other images from the 31st GA?

Have you seen a biography or obituary for Pvt. Barkley, and/or know his final resting place? I'm a bit confused about his injuries. Was he blinded, and wounded or bruised in his right thigh and both arms at Sharpsburg, and received gunshot wounds at 3rd Winchester on September 19, 1864, or did all of his wounds occur at Sharpsburg?

You should be very proud of your ancestors. One of mine was wounded while fighting with Rhett's Battery, Brooks Artillery (SC) at Sharpsburg, and another may have been present with Gregg's Brigade at Antietam. A month or two after Sharpsburg he was discharged for being under age!
