This area of the Oothcalooga Creek valley is really pretty with rolling ridges and hills. Cheatham's Division spread across the road and railroad in their holding action and you can see how this area would have been very hard to hold in a true defensive position which is why Johnston continued to fall back over the Gravelly Plateau and set up the ambush at Cassville.
