It would appear that his widow's pension application incorrectly stated his regiment as that of the 22nd Georgia, vice the 21st.

Two cards are found in the regiment's roster:

Green Leroy Mercer, discharged at Staunton, Virginia April 4, 1863 on Surgeon's Certificate of disability, War Department, Auditor of Public Accounts correspondence with ???, dated April 3, 1918, 21st Georgia not 22nd

Green L. Mercer, age 21, Private, Captain Lynch's Company, Georgia Infantry,* enlisted July 17, 1861 at Antioch, Stewart County, Georgia by Capt. Michael Lynch for the duration of the war, gunshot wound left forearm at Sharpsburg, September 17, 1862, admitted General Hospital, Staunton, Virginia, March 13?, 1863, wounded, discharged April 4, 1863 as unfit for duty last 180 days, permanently disabled arm, description: 22 year old Salesman/Farmer, born in Stewart Co., Ga., 5' 4/6", dark complexion, black eyes, black hair

* This company subsequently became Company I, 21st Regiment Georgia Infantry
