Re: 36th (Broyles) Georgia infantry Co. G.

Mr. McElrath,

The 36th Georgia was not consolidated with the 42nd Georgia until April 9, 1865. The 42nd Georgia (Consolidated) consisted of the remnants of the 34th, 36th, 42nd, and 56th Georgia Infantry Regiments.

Thomas P. McElrath joined what would become Company I, 36th Georgia on March 19, 1862 and received a $50.00 bounty payment. He appears on a list of 347 sick and wounded Confederate prisoners delivered to Confederate authorities at Mobile, Alabama. He was court-martialed (General Order 14/9, dated February 12, 1864, Department & Army of Tennessee, J.E. Johnston). He is shown as being detailed on August 12, 1864. (Source: Compiled Service Record of Confederate Soldiers from Georgia, Record Group 94, National Archives, 36th Georgia, Thomas P. McElrath.)

His court-martial trial was on January 21, 1864 and he received company level punishment. (Source: Bunch, Jack A. Roster of the Courts-Martial in the Confederate States Army. Shippensburg, PA: White Mane Books, 2001, page 231.

His name appears on a Muster Roll of Officers and Men paroled in accordance with the terms of a Military Convention entered on April 26, 1865 between General Joseph E. Johnston and Major General William T. Sherman, roll dated April 28, 1865, High Point, NC. Paroled at Greensboro, NC, May 1, 1865. (Source: Compiled Service Record of Confederate Soldiers from Georgia, Record Group 94, National Archives, 42nd Georgia, Thomas McElrath.)

He and his widow filed for Georgia Confederate Indigent Soldier and Widow Pensions in Murray County, Georgia. He filed in 1895 and she filed on September 8, 1910. Both signed by their mark. He also signed his Vicksburg parole by his mark. They were married on June 9, 1866 in Burke County, NC. He was born in NC in 1823 and died July 10, 1901 and was a resident of Murray County, Georgia.

Solomon O'Kelley joined what would become Company I, 36th Georgia on March 19, 1862 and received a $50.00 bounty. He is shown as being Absent on leave in Georgia on a July 1862 regimental return. No further record. (Source: Compiled Service Record of Confederate Soldiers from Georgia, Record Group 94, National Archives, 36th Georgia, Solomon Okelley.)

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
