Ms. Wheeler,

Egypt Station, Mississippi of 1864 was located on the railroad just to the east of the intersection of today's US-45 (ALT) and County Road 406. The railroad was a vital supply route for Hood's Army of Tennessee who was still in Tennessee at this time. You can find the location in "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War," Plate 149, page 344, grid H1, and Plate 154, page 355, grid F13.

What was your husband's ancestor's name? The 34th Georgia was in Cumming's Brigade and the brigade was still on the retreat from Nashville and preparing to cross the Tennessee River. Your story may be a clue to some men that had been detailed for security for the trains.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,

Gerald D. Hodge, Jr.

My husbands gggrandfather was in this unit. I have found out that he was wounded and his left thumb and finger were amputated. This happened at Egypt Station, MS Dec 28, 1864. We are coming to GA in a week and would like to find out more about this battle. I can't find were this battle site is locatedin MS.
