Griffin Lambert Pippin

I was born in 1940, in Holmes County, Noma Florida and raised in the tri-state Wiregrass area of Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

My Great-Great Grandfather, Griffin Lambert Pippin Sr. (1803-1870), had my Great Grandfather, Griffin Lambert Pippin Jr (1833-1889), with my Great-Great Grandmother, Leiza Taylor (1805-1838). He then had five more sons with Ramath Gillead King (1822-1880). He had 2 more sons with another couple of ladies that pre-dated these two ladies.

My Great-Great Grandfather, Griffin Sr., was very briefly in the 6th Florida Infantry Regiment. It’s recorded as Enlisted in Company H, Florida 6th Infantry Regiment on 10 May 1862. Mustered out on 15 May 1862 at Mt Vernon, FL.

My Great Grandfather, Griffin Jr., was in the 1st Florida Cavalry (Union).

If you search the Civil War Database you find that there are 3 Griffin Pippins’. One in the 6th Florida, my GGG. One in the 1st Florida Cavalry (Union), my GG, and one in the 33d Alabama my ???.
If you know anything about the panhandle during the unpleasantness you know that it was full of deserters and lowlifes from everywhere and was virtually lawless. In truth, it wasn’t much better when I was born…or now.

The 1st Florida Cavalry (Union) was filled with these characters and was not thought very highly of in the panhandle of Florida and South Alabama. Alas, my Great Grandfather was one of these brigands. He was married to Sarah Jane Ward and they had Walker Calvin Pippin (1871-1918) who is my Grandfather.
Which brings us to the third Griffin Pippin in the 33d Alabama. The 33d was raised in the wiregrass area and saw some nasty fighting in the West. I was searching widow pension applications in Florida and I have one for Sarah Pippin and Walker Pippin and the soldier is Griffin Pippin Pvt. 1st Florida Cav. Searching Alabama, I have one for Sarah Pippin in Dale County AL and the soldier is Griffin Pippin Pvt. Co B 33d Ala.

I’m just wondering if gramps joined the 33d and had his fill of walking and maybe scooted home and joined the Cavalry. What do you think?
