The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: 6th Ky Cav (CSA)

Mike,

CS cavalry in the west did use the First National flag into 1864 for many commands whereas the cavalry of the ANV was standardized in late November, 1861. I did an article this year for the Tennessee Division Sons of Confederate Veterans reunion magazine on western Confederate cavalry battle flags and this is one of the conclusions that I argued was the extensive use of First Nationals.

I checked my files and have nothing for flags for this unit.

The large blue flags with the red Latin Cross adorned by white stars were the battle flags only for John Breckinridge's Division which included the KY Orphan Brigade along with other troops from Alabama, etc. An Alabama diary account tells of his regiment getting one of these flags. They were issued probably in May, 1862 or thereabouts.
