The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: Message Board Rules

Ben,

We will agree to disagree here.

How would the Yankees know what a brigade or division flag was most of the time? I have cited before a few flags so described by Federal captors that turned out to be regular unit colors and not any type of brigade or division HQ flag. Case in point - the First National flag of the 21st Virginia taken at Culp's Hill at Gettysburg on JUly 2, 1863. The capture account calls it a "brigade flag." It is the then battle flag for the 21st Virginia who did not get their first ANV Richmond Depot flag until late August, 1863 based on Worsham's account.

I have other such ID'd flags in the listings as well.

Unless we get a vivid description from the 12th Tennessee Cavalry (US) describing the flag they took at Nashville we only have suppositions.
