Re: 76th Ohio Flag Returned
In Response To: Re: 76th Ohio Flag Returned ()

The 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment captured the 76th Ohio's, Regimental flag. The 29th Missouri also lost a flag/colors. The 13th Illinois had dropped their regimental flag not far from Cleburne's position (60 yards). One captain from the 2nd Arkansas wanted to run down the hill and get the flag, but Cleburne said no. The captain was extremely displeased and had to be physically restrained from violating Cleburne's sensible prohibition. (Page 377) "The Shipwreck of there hopes."

My source on the 76th Ohio, comes from the book "The Battles For Chattanooga" "The Shipwreck of Their Hopes." By Peter Cozzens. Page 379 all the way on the bottom.

I will quote, "Eight color-bearers and two officers were shot down while shielding the National Colors, which the Ohioans brought safely off the ridge. The First Arkansas got the Regimental Flag, however."

The 29th Missouri also lost a flag (Page 375, up top.) Major Taylor commanding the 17th-18th-24th and 25th Texas dismounted cavalry, captured "colors." Peter Cozzens does not mention which flag or if both flags. Major Taylor led three companies in a counter-attack and that small party captured the 29th Missouri's flag/colors. Those three companies are unknown to what Texas dismounted cavalry regiment they were in.

On another note, my associates and I have finished ALL the Union regimental histories at the Library of Congress. Finally...whew. Very rare they admitted to losing a flag. Not much help there. But many regimental histories are not in the Library of Congress, I am searching for the missing ones and/or regimental histories I do not own. I am pretty sure that the 17th-18th-24th and 25th Texas dismounted cavalry regimental histories will help out on this issue, to who captured the 29th Missouri's flag/colors.

But many Union regiments do not have a regimental history, same as Confederate regiments. Its always that one regiment you need info on.....

ED and Gregg, great job, keep it up! We will figure this out! Stay with it and don't lose hope!

Have a good morning (as you can see I am still up and its 3am.) Searching never ends till I pass out asleep.

After this project comes to a conclusion, I shall work on all Union artillery captured, even down to one tube. Just to finally get that straight. Then will be "Africans in Grey", I have FULL PROOF, that several African (CSA) companies fought at Petersburg. That shall end that rumor.

Have a morning!
