Re: Officials Think SC Civil War Flag Found in Iow

Hi Alan,

Yes, Capt. Culpepper was in the class of 54, what is the connection with unidentified red palmetto flag in Iowa? There was higher ranking officers that could have been entrusted with the flag. How about the battery outside of Charleston maned by the Citadel Cadets why would they not have the flag? A cherished flag would not have been put in harms way, as, the Citadels regimental, keep safe in the walls of the Citadel until the approach of the Union Army on Charleston, it was sent to Columbia and then on to Charlotte.

Culpepper's battery was miles from Mobile, the battery was captured in 64, the flag was reported by the Iowa Historical Society as being captured in Mobile in 65. The owner of the flag Mr. Baker just said that he got the flag in Mobile, how, he didn't recall in his death bed statement. Mr. Baker remained in Mobile after the war, so he could have picked it up at a shop or anywhere, exchanged it for food money buy its maker. But it's a stretch to connect the flag, as the facts are known, with the battery 20 miles away and a year later.

If you want to get in on the fray, follow the link in my other post. This flag has been debated here before and the Citadel Historical Council has nothing new to say that would be of interest here. In fact they added some of the research debated here in their report, and yet still have no clue.

Happy Trails!
