I've seen the real thing done that way (www.moc.org...search flag database), I've seen very authentic reenactor flags sewn that way and very accurate North-South Skirmish Association unit flags sewn that way. I hope Greg will weigh in here and I don't mean to belittle you as I know from your posts that you have owned many period flags and your knowledge is far reaching. But honestly MOST of the flags I have seen were sewn that way. For one it cut down on material used for the stars and eliminated any deviation in aligning two sets of stars, one on each side. I'm not saying that all flags were sewn this way. We both know from our research that the origins and construction techniques varied greatly. Especially as the war dragged on.
