Re: 2nd National CS Flag at Gettysburg - only one

Ben,

The Louisiana arty flag was probably taken in the November, 1863 Mine Run-Rappahannock Campaign as Hay's LA Brigade, along with another NC brigade (I think) got totally hammered there being posted on the north bank of the river and on the receiving end of a massive Union attack. A number of flags from both brigades were taken there.

As for flags with "Gettysburg" honors, and NC regiment with them would have had to have been in Heth's Division and lost a flag in the battle of part of Johnson's Division which got new flags after the battle.

The late Richard Rollins' book "The Damned Red Flag Of The Rebellion" is the most detailed source for CS flags taken at Gettysburg (although at least two definite captures he missed came out well after its publication). A couple clarifications have also been made since the book.

Heth's Division had these NC regiments: 11th, 26th, 47th, 52nd (Pettigrew's Brigade) and the 55th NC (Davis' Miss. Brigade). Of these NC regiments the following lost flags at GB - 26th NC, 47th NC, 52nd NC, 55th NC - all in the Pettigrew-Pickett Charge of July 3rd. None of these flags were marked with either unit designations or battle honors.

Johnson's Division only had 2 NC regiments - the 1st and 3rd - both in Steuart's Brigade. Only one lost a flag - the 3rd NC (their ANV silk flag from 1861). It too is unmarked in any way.

I have not looked at the NC flags in some time as I am still working on my TN flags book and my NC files are currently on loan to the NC Museum of History curator and I do not have them back to check them for the replacement flags with the "Gettysburg" battle honors on them.

If someone wants to pipe in with that it would be helpful.
