Union flags captured

I was looking on the New York times newspaper dated February 21st, 1888. "The Battle-Flag Outcry."

On the right side they listed recaptured Union flags. Same list I found three years ago at the LOC.

I do have questions on three flags.

1) 9th Ohio Infantry is listed, battle they lost flag??
2) 81st PA Infantry " " " "
3) 4th NY Infantry " " " "

The 9th Ohio Infantry mustered out on May 25th, 1864. They fought in the West Va Campaign early in the war, Mill Springs, they missed the battle of Shiloh, arriving on April 8th. They did fight at 1st Corinth, lightly engaged at Perryville, they were not engaged at Murfreesboro, at Chickamauga (Peter Cozzen's book "This Terrible Sound" does sound like a possibility. Page 452 "On hills one and two in the saddle, Colonel Kammerling instead of stopping and throw up breastworks, Colonel Kammerling went forward all alone. He led his men over the brow and down the draw in a mad dash toward the enemy. 5 mins later, they were back, their Colonel chastened at last. "The Rebels were too damned thick down there, snarled Kammerling."

Out of 502 men that began the battle, 11 officers and 237 enlisted men were either K/W/C. That was one-third of the entire brigade's loss. I think it had to have been at Chickamuaga, they lost a flag.

The 4th New York, took their worse losses at Sharpsburg, losing 187 men. They lost 74 men at Fredericksburg and took no part at Chancellorsville. During the Seven Days battles they were in the 7th Corps, so they did not fight. At the battle of Sharpsburg they were in BG. Weber's brigade along with the 1st Delaware and 5th Maryland. The 4th New York attacked the "Sunken Lane" in front of the 14th NC and 4th NC. The 2nd NC and 30th NC providing oblique fire (perhaps).

So if this was the "4th New York" its apparent that they either lost a flag at Sharpsburg or Fredericksburg. They were not engaged in any other battle that severe. They had no loss at Chancellorsville or Snicker's Gap.

The 81st Pennsylvania, I believe lost their flag at Seven Pines. The right wing broke when the regiments to its right broke. The left flank held, but then was attacked from the rear. The 81st PA is listed in the two book series "Advance the Colors" as well. But no say where they lost their flag.

Well let me know what you think.

Have a good evening,

Shawn Prouty
