The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: Richmond T/D & Captured Flags 1904

Thanks Tom. Some great sources there that I will be investigating. I've got a great book find that I found on Amazon called "Contributions to a History of The Richmond Howitzer Battalion" Butternut and Blue Press. It's a compilation of several previously published works. Most are diaries submitted as "pamphlets" as they called them back then. One of the more lengthy sections or "pamphlets" is called "The Civil War, or What I Saw of It" by William S. White. He was a corporal on the forth gun detachment of the Third Company of The Howitzers. His writing and memory are awesome. He grew up in Hanover County, Virginia and was "gunner" on detachment no. 4, Third Company when their close in fire set Pole Green Church on fire. He had attended that church and he and his father were baptized there. It's an awesome recollection from Bethel to Appomattox. While there is great mention of the field pieces in these diaries there is little discussion of their flags. I guess their guns held more favor than their banners. I have spoken with Greg about their flags. Do you have any more info on what the three companies carried? Were they just depot issued bunting varieties or were any of them personalized with battle honors and such? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
