Ryan, the flag was captured at the Battle of Ezra Church by the 46th Ohio. The 30th's color guard was wiped out and left laying on the field. The source describing the flag is from the Vicksburg Daily Herald (pro union paper) that got the news story from a correspondent from the Cincinnati Commercial. Got this from Jeff Giambrone, formally of the Old State House Musuem in Vicksburg. The date of the Daily Herald's publication is August 20, 1864.
