Re: General Sheridan's "Staff Flag" captured

The unmarked blue regimental flag shown in the Time-Life book "Arms And Equipment Of The Union" and listed as belonging to the U.S. Regulars and captured at Stones River is I believe in error. The Regular Brigade had its distinctive battle flag of blue silk with a gold star in the center. Of the battalions, only the 1st Battalion and Second Battlion of the 18th Infantry had recieved their National colors, and those privately purchased with their own funds.

The 3rd Confederate Infantry, Wood's brigade, which was credited with capturing the colors, did no go up aginst the Regular Brigade.

Respectfully and GOD's Blessings,

Lanny Smith
