Re: 5th Maine's captured CSA flag at Rappahannock

Shawn, Here is what I have found:

I believe that the 6th and 7th Flags (from newspaper articles further down on forum) captured belonged to the 54th and 6th North Carolina Regiments, based on the 6th NC being at Elthaim’s Landing (Author’s Note: Correct spelling of the action) and the 54th NC was NOT there.

The 21st NC was not there, it was the 57th NC that was there. This from book on 6th La, and I think I confirmed it by finding the OoB.

The flag that was not captured belonged to the 7th Louisiana (8th flag in the news article). From Terry Jones (yes the author of Lee’s Tigers) he wrote on this forum and noted that Leon Bertin, color bearer of the 7th La. tore his flag from the staff and hid it under his shirt before surrendering. Later it appears he tore it up and burned it to prevent its capture.

Also, your summary shows 2 different yankee units took the 8th Louisiana Flag (1st Flag in news article), Sgt Roberts of the 6th Maine gets credit and CMOH for this action

What is the question, is to what units the 2nd through the 5th flags captured belong too
