One of these days we need to hook up and get with David Fraley and Thomas Cartwright and let's put our collective heads together to see what we can create in terms of a listing of CS flags taken at Franklin.

The trouble is, as Eric has alluded to, that some regiments took flags initially and then lost them to superior officers or other regiments! This is not the only time of the war where this happened.

Additonally, since many of these flags did not make it to the Union War Department (the farther away you were form Washington the less likely that was going to happen) and were somewhat scattered to Northern states, we may never, ever, know what flags were taken there with certainty. Additonally, some flags are now lost - as in one of the Missouri flags that burned in the great Chicago fire.

I helped create the Flags of the Confederacy website (www.confederateflags.org) and one new addition that I would like to do to it is add a section denoting CS flags taken in battle by battle and campaign. Not only would this be a clearing house for such information, it might also let us know about some flags that have slipped through the cracks from others who have researched specific battles.
