I've seen in several diaries, letters, etc. from Confederate soldiers mentioning that a certain aspect of the campground or a particular geographical feature (creek, ravine, etc.) was located so many feet or yards from "the color line." Not being an expert in this area, can someone educate me on the purpose and location of the "color line", especially in regard to Confederate regimental encampments?
