Does anyone know the circumstances of how the flag was lost? I've read that the flag fell to the ground when the color -bearer was shot and at least one Union soldier was shot while trying to retrieve it. Later, Lt. Pete Ambler of the 11th Connecticut found the flag, put it in his knapsack, and took it home after he was discharged. The 11th Connecticut was positioned more than two miles away from the Louisiana Brigade, so how did Ambler come to run across it and why didn't the Tigers retrieve it beforehand?
