Re: Last (Hatcher's Run) 11th MS Colors

Gents,

The 11th Mississippi Infantry also lost their Richmond Depot 3rd Bunting flag at Gettysburg. This flag replaced the ANV silk issue lost at Antietam. The 3rd Bunting flag bears four battle honors in yellow gold pain - Manassas (upper quadrant); Seven Pines (left quadrant); Gaine's Farm (right quadrant) and Malvern Hill (bottom quadrant). This flag is WD 39.

The flag lost at Hatcher's Run on April 2, 1865 replaced the above flag. This one was issued in August/September 1863 and bears the following battle honors: Manassas, Seven Pines (upper quadrant); Gaine's Farm, Malvern Hill (left quadrant); Manassas No. 2, Boonsboro (right quadrant) and Sharpsburg, Gettysburg (bottom quadrant). This is also a Richmond Depot 3rd Bunting issue flag. The only ANV flags issued from the depot with "Gettysburg" honors were for those units who lost color there that had been part of Henry Heth's Division and Ed Johnson's Division (who could not get new flags before the campaign due to the bunting shortage at the depot).

According to the Howard Madaus scale drawing of the flag taken at Hatcher's Run, "the upper edge of the flag is tattered and torn away." Bit since it exists in private hands today then it was not torn to shreds as the above histories claim. It is indeed, as Ken states, clearly marked 11th Miss. around he center star.
