5th Texas's first flag.

I recently bought the book "The Bloody Fifth" "The 5th Texas Infantry Regiment, Hood's Texas Brigade." Vol 1: Seccession to the Suffolk Campaign.

On page 91, "On June 14th, 1862, the 5th Texas was presented with a new ANV battle flag, made in early 1862 by Mrs. Matilda "Maude" Jane Fuller Young of Houston, whose son Samuel Oliver Young, Jr was in Company A.

The author believes that Private. Robert Campbell of Houston (New Recruit) brought the flag, east. The first flag carried by the 5th Texas was returned to Houston.

The author has a website: http://gennotes.150m.com/batflag/html

On page 92, "The Young flag generally conformed to ANV specifications, but lacked any borders or fimbriations. It was slightly smaller the regulations colors (37 inches on the hoist and 42 inches on the fly) and had a prominent Texas lone star on the center of the crossed bars. A rectangular, white bade with "5th. Txs." pained on it in black was affixed to the upper field. The flag also had a dark blue, 4x57 inch streamer with white lettering attached to its staff. The obverse of that streamer had an embroidered motto, "vivere sat vincere" (To live long enough is to conquer) and the reverse displayed "5 REG VOL." and a lone star with one small letter on the "Texas" appearing in each of its respective points.

Author's source: "Martin . Callahan, "Returned with Honor: The Flag of the 5th Texas," North/South Trader's Civil War, (1998), 25:36-42.

Hope that helps out anyone!

Have a good night,
