The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: NY Medal of Honors for Capturing Flags

You may have missed one:

The Brigades of Bidwell [3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps], Warner [1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps] and Foster 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps] of Getty’s Division poured into the trenches at the top of the ridge. They captured the four guns of Capt John C. Carpenter’s Alleghany Battery, turning two of the pieces on their former operators. Pvt James Connors of the 43rd NY Infantry grabbed a Rebel flag, earning a Medal of Honor for his action.

This flag is reported to have seen little battle service at the time of its capture, in consequence of which there are no bullet rents marring its wholeness and no battles inscribed. The only thing defacing its surface is a few moth-eaten spots. It is attached to a short, rough-hewn staff. Accompanying this flag is the following legend, which appears to have been written some day's after its capture, and signed by BG G. W. Getty: "The flag of the 2nd Louisiana regiment was captured in the battle of the 22nd of Sep, 1864, at Fisher's Hill near Strasburg, Va., by Pvt James Connor, Co F, 43rd New York Volunteers Sharp Shooters, at Headquarters, 2nd Division, 6th Corps, in the earthworks occupied by Carpenter's Rebel Battery. Signed, G. W. Getty, Harrisonburg, Va., Brigadier-General, commanding. In this battle the 2nd Louisiana [grouped with 1st, 10th, 14th and 15th Louisiana under Col Eugene Waggaman] was attached to Stafford's Brigade [Source Patchen’s book lists as York’s Brigade] of MG John B. Gordon's Division. This brigade seems to have held its part of the works at Fisher's Hill until most others had left, when the Federals flanked the left of the Confederate line, which crumbled to pieces from left to right . . .

“The Flags of the Confederate Armies: Returned to the Men That Bore Them, United States Government,” by Buxton & Skinner, St. Louis, Vol XIII, page 664, “Souvenir Supplement.” [Made hard CC of image] June 1905, relating to capture of flag 2nd Louisiana at Fisher’s Hill by Pvt Pvt James Connor, Company F, 43rd New York Volunteers Sharp Shooters.

Case No. 1627 (499519). “Minutes of the Meetings of the Medal of Honor Board,” dtd Nov 16, 1916, and “Volume of Briefs and File of 2,625 Cases Showing Synopsis and Basis of Award in Each Case.” 1627. Connors, James (499519). 1628. Creed, John (474347). 1673. Moore, George G. (499519), all for “Capture of flag.”
