Re:Why not the 32nd Alabama?

Ben,

No such thing as typical company size. The TN State Museum has some very large company colors that are First Nationals - some larger than "regimental" First Nationals they also hold. Also - lots of company flags were used as regimental colors during the war. The 21st Virginia used one that was captured at Gettysburg in fact - they used it to replace the First National regimental flag they lost at Chancellorsville. Some company flags were used as regimental colors at Mill Springs and captured there in January 1862.

Is it possible your flag was taken at Lavergne? Yes - but from the guy that captured it and his description - and the fact that the only flag ever mentioned in the numerous newspaper articles was that of the 32nd Alabama - then the flag taken by the 21st Ohio was that of the 32nd Alabama.

The newspapers make no mention of the large FN flag in Illinois also taken there so again your flag could be from there as well. There were other CS troops in the fight and the flag couple have been taken from a house - as happened when the Federals moved into Murfreesboro, Nashville, New Orleans, etc.

Just wish the flag's captor had left a vivid account of where he got it. The 7th PA Cavalry was very active in Middle TN in late 1862 and into 1863. The captor got out of the unit in May 1862 so we are looking between September 1862 and May 1863 - and the soldier that got it was injured at Murfreesboro in late December 1862. They could have obtained the flag from their attack at Franklin.
