Shiloh, April 7, 1862
"Our Colors were struck during the battle by thirty-four bullets and one shell; but the two gallant color-bearers, Sergt. A. G. Thompson and John E. DeLear carried the colors through the two days conflict without receiving a scratch, although all the color guard but one were killed or wounded." [p. 24]
Note, the two noted were assigned to Company E
