Frederick,

Boy - I sure don't recall writing anything for the 11th VA flags in 1996 or ever - and nothing that I have allegedly written is in my own files. I would like to see a copy of it.

As Ken has said, the only known flag for the 11th VA is their First National in the Lynchburg Museum. However, that museum also holds two other flags, both Richmond Depot ANV flags - one a Second Bunting and the other a Third Bunting. Les Jensen wrote them some years ago about the Second Bunting and hinted that this might also be an 11th VA flag from 1862. The QM records of David Meade (MOC Library), shows they had a flag on hand in their quarterly return. Either flag, or none of them, are 11th VA flags. We just do not know.

Gary Hendershott a few years ago sold a nice VA state flag from Samuel Garland who was the 11th VA's first colonel that might have a connection to the unit as well.

As for WD 322 - God only knows that ID.

The key question remains - where is their June 1863 ANV Third Bunting with their unit designation painted in white on the red field????? I have never heard of them losing their flag at Gettysburg and neither had the late Richard Rollins who wrote the book on CS flags in that campaign. At least three of Pickett's regiments saved their colors that day - 11th VA, 14th Va and one other (Rollins makes mention if I recall).

I have never heard of any flags from the 11th VA being sold at auction before. I would not doubt that one or two are in private hands today though including the missing June 1863 flag if that was not torn up by the members or something similar.
