Color Sgt, 1st MO Cav Regt

A. Rankin Black, initially served in 5th Division, Missouri State Guard, and fought at Blue Mills Landing and Lexington.

At age 20, this Worth County farmer, enlisted as a Private in Co H, 1st MO Cav Regt at Springfield, MO, for 1 year. He served with the regiment from Elkhorn to Franklin, TN. In the latter battle, as color sergeant, he was wounded and captured, but "escaped with the flag in his bosom," according to remarks in his CSR. He was subsequently captured at Ft. Blakely, Ala.
