While trolling for flags in the LOC catalog I was pleasantly surprised to see a B&W photo of the first naval ensign of the CSS Virginia that I have never seen before. A color print has been published quite often in various media but I have never seen this photo published, maybe others have. The file size (25MB) actually allows you to read the writing on the header. In a very nice hand there is "CSS Virginia" then in a different hand "Hampton Road and then March 8 x 4-1862".
