Re: Flags in Battle Abbey, Richmond, 1976

I remember visiting Battle Abbey as a child, and being awed by all of those flags.

Another (although much smaller) awesome display was at the Lee Chapel, before the replica replacements, and long before the political correctness running amuck removal of the replicas. Three stories - (1) two inebriated men attempted to steal of of the (original) flags, and got it out of the Chapel before being caught. They might have been successful if they hadn't been so drunk. (2) The Chapel gave one of the original flags to either Tennessee or Kentucky. This did not please the Museum of the Confederacy, owner of the flags. (I don't know if the flag was returned.) (3) The flags at the Chapel were on authentic poles. The Chapel decided the display would look better if all the flags were at the same height, so out came the saw. I asked Robert Hancock (curator at the MOC) if this story was true, a pained look crossed his face, without saying a word he turned and opened a drawer (we were in the flag room) and pointed to a group of uniform length flag poles that all had similar looking cut bases.
