Re: 16th Missouri Infantry Flag at Reunion

Jim,
Nice find. However, it does pose some questions that can't be answered
easily.
This flag was placed in Confederate Memorial Hall at New Orleans by the
widow of Col.Cumming in Oct. 1893. It last appears on a CMH inventory
in 1917! Where did it go and to who?
In 1904 the veterans of the 16th Missouri begin a search for their flag!
See Dallas Morning News of March 10, 1904 (pg.2) Why did they NOT
know where it was? It was at their reunion in 1902!!!
The flag itself is of a blue field with red border containing a white Christian
cross close to the hoist edge. A flag of this type survives in the Missouri State
Museum (1st Mo. Cav).
The flag of the 16th's whereabouts has remained a mystery until 2005 when a
flag of this same type came up for sale in the private market. It is suspected
that this newly surfaced flag is that of the 16th Missouri.
Confusing is it not?
