Alfred Hamilton enlisted as a private in Co H, 11th MO Inf Regt on June 20, 1862, and transferred to the 9th MO SS Bn (Pindall's) on November 28, 1862 at Camp Mazzard, Ark. Wounded at Prairie Grove, Ark on December 7, 1862, the battalion commander appointed him color sergeant for his gallantry at that engagement. He thereafter carried the battalion colors at Helena, Ark., Pleasant Hill, La., and Jenkins' Ferry, Ark. Appointed 1st Lt. and ensign on October 28, 1864, to rank from October 17, 1864. Paroled at Shreveport, La, on June 7, 1865, Hamilton was a resident of Monroe County, Mo.
