I should have been more exact in my phraseology. It is possible that the 2nd Missouri Cavalry received a Van Dorn flag in 1862 as this flag was widely issued in the Army of the West. I based my comment on this possibility only. If such a flag existed it would then have been superseded by the flag described in the 1887 article.

That the 2nd Missouri Cavalry was issued with a “Bowen” pattern flag is very interesting. I had understood that this flag was limited to the infantry and dismounted cavalry serving in what would become Bowen’s Division. This is evidence that this pattern of flag was very likely issued to all of the Missouri units (excluding artillery?) in the Department of Mississippi amd Eastern Louisiana.
