In the spring of 1864 the 2nd Missouri Cavalry was part of Forrest’s Cavalry. Forrest’s units were not provided with any depot-issued flags until July 1864. The flag referred to in letter may very well have been a Van Dorn pattern flag that the 2nd Missouri is believed to have received in the summer of 1862.
