her report did NOT say anything about lifting the disc whatsoever. The first owner is the one who found, through back lighting, the remnants of the crossed cannons and unit designation. Fonda did the same thing which is what I stated here.

She then stated that this was under the disc itself and not on the disc. That means to me, despite her statement that she could find no evidence of the dis being replaced, that it must have been replaced and that the crossed cannons and unit designation soaked through the original disc. How else this could be seen while back lighted under the disc I cannot figure out unless that disc was replaced.

This means, either way (disc washed or disc replaced), the same flag issued in early 1864 was altered by the unit at some point when its designation was changed.

It might be good for you to take it to another textile professional and see if they find that the disc was altered.
