TM,

The idea is that these flags were based on the 12 star ANV prototype battle flag of Gen. PGT Beauregard which was sent to Mobile for safe keeping after its issue in the Fall of 1861. The first ANV flags issued in late November 1861 also only had 12 stars. The rump secession of Kentucky did not take place until November 1861 and they would be the 13th star.

Forrest's Corps flags of the Mobile Depot pattern of course had only 12 stars and there is NO truth to the myth that he was mad at Kentucky for not fully seceding. Forrest had nothing to do at all with the making of these flags or their design.
