Ryan,

Interesting that the account states that the flag at Appomattox had those battle honors on them.

The 17th Mississippi was in Barksdale's/Humphries' Brigade of McLaws' Division, 1st Corps. As such, they were not one of the divisions that got the full division level battle honors that Madaus deduced. As follows:

April, 1863 - DH Hill's Division (later Rodes') - the last honor was for Fredericksburg

May 1863 (after Chancellorsville) - AP Hill's Division (later Pender's and two brigades of Heth's) - the last honor was for Chancellorsville.

August/September 1863 - Ed Johnson's Division and those units of Heth's that lost flags at Gettysburg - the last honor was for Gettysburg.

There were, before and after these divisional issues, flags decorated on the brigade level. For example, Kershaw's Brigade had brigade level honors and they were in McLaw's Division. The other two brigades of McLaw's Division, the Georgia brigades of Semmes and Wofford, had unmarked ANV flags.

So this begs the question - when did the units of Barksdale's/Humphries' Brigade do their honors which may have been only on the brigade level. I will have to do some digging into surviving flags of this brigade and see what else there is to work with.
