McClain Rangers flag

Has anyone ever heard of a man by the name of Captain M. McClain who is said to have been with the 1st Texas Battalion Cavalry? The company flag was a nine star flag 1st National pattern with the canton at the bottom instead of the top. Across the middle of the white strip is the words "McClain Rangers We Come".
This flag is said to have been captured by a Mr. Spafford of Illinois who gave it to a Capt. Gould in 1872 (the first names of these men are unknown at this time) and in 1886 was given by Gould to his son, William P. Gould.
References mention Brown county (Texas) but I can find nothing on this man or the flag or any connection to the 1st Texas Cavalry. Supposedly McClain's company was mustered into service in Shreveport (LA) of men from TX, LA and MS.
