Gregg,
Thank you for your reply. That's very interesting information concerning the capture of the 7th TX flag, Curious why the regiment chose not to use their Hardee style banner? The reference for the description of the fight between Col MacArthur and the confederate major carrying the flag is from the book; " The 24th WI Infantry in the Civil War: Biography of a Regiment " by William J K Beaudot, pages 337 to 338. The narrative suggests, and I emphasize suggests, that when MacArthur first noticed the flag and rode in its direction a different person may have been carrying the flag - possibly the color bearer. However by the time MacArthur reached the flag the narrative states it was being carried by a " major ". So its possible Ira Sadler, color bearer of the 7th TX, was carrying the flag, was wounded, and the banner picked up by Capt John W Brown, 7th TX. The only major listed for Granbury's Brigade ( from the Sept, 1864 AOT Organization Report ) was Maj William A Taylor, 24th & 25th Consolidated TX. Don't have a good answer for the difference in rank identifications. Anyway. very interesting new information. Thank you again.
Is the 7th TX flag you are describing similar to a 15 star Tilghman Flag which was used while his division was located at Holly Springs in 1863?
