Re: 12th Mississippi Company Flag

Hello Greg,

The park is officially the "Grand Gulf Military Monument Commission". Back in 1989 I wrote to request information about a flag fragment inside an apothecary jar on display in the small museum. The letter I received in return has a "State of Mississippi" letterhead so it must fall under state jurisdiction.

The reply quoted a display card that stated "A remnant of the Battle Flag of the "Bloody" Sixth Mississippi Regiment. Carried at the Battle of Shiloh and through many battles during the War for Southern Independence. At the Battle of Shiloh seven color bearers were killed or wounded while carrying the flag"

Grady Howell mentions this flag on page 288 of Going to Meet the Yankees: A History of the "Bloody Sixth" Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. From my notes the fragment is from a Second National so the Shiloh attribution is somewhat questionable.
