Capt. A. W. Hodges Co. D,. 43rd Tenn. left Decatur, Tenn. for Knoxville. A beautiful banner was presented to the company on their departure by the Ladies of that section of the county. Being the fourth flag that has been fitted up & presented in stile [sic] by the Good & Patriotic Ladies of Meigs” (H. T. Blevins letter dated 12/1/81 at Decatur, Tenn. to Capt. N. J. BGen. H. Marshall’s brigade joined Gen. Bragg’s army at Mt. Sterling. The ladies of Mt. Sterling presented the regiment
with a beautiful stand of regimental colors, which was received by Lieut.-col. D. M. Key [43rd Tenn.]

In an article which appeared on October 17 in the Chattanooga Rebel is:

The Spirit of Kentucky.

A correspondent with General Bragg’s army, writing of the

spirit of Kentucky, and the reception given our army, says:

The spirit of the women is irrepressible. Our troops are

everywhere met with smiles and tears of the women and

they display the Southern flag and wave their handkerchiefs

wherever we go. I have no doubts of the Southern

sympathies of Kentucky.
