“At 10 a. m. white flags were displayed from the Rebel works. The butternuts then formed and marched out of their entrenchments….. At an order from their officers, the units halted, dressed ranks, stacked arms, and laid their colors on the stacks . . . Shorn of their accoutrements, the soldiers returned to their camps within the Vicksburg perimeter.”
“Company G, 2d Missouri Infantry laid aside its guns and accoutrements, and saw the tattered and worn but proud battle-flag of the regiment droop quietly upon its standard, and rest its scarlet folds peacefully upon the stack of arm.”
